Bulldogs Drop Regular-Season Finale To Georgia
October 26, 2025 | Soccer
STARKVILLE – No. 25 Mississippi State fell to Georgia, 1-0, in the last regular season game of the year on Sunday. In a game defined by poor weather conditions and a soggy field, the visitors scored the game's only goal off their own rebound in the 75th minute.
Â
"This is one of those that's tough. I thought we did enough to get a result," head coach Nick Zimmerman said. "Credit to them. They punished us. We didn't track, and at this level, that's what happens. We'll have some time off now to get ready to go to Pensacola, and we will have to figure out how we can get better and grow."
Â
Through the first 45 minutes, Georgia (10-3-5, 6-1-3 SEC) and State (10-5-1, 5-4-1 SEC) combined for just seven total shots with only one from Georgia on frame. There were 19 combined fouls, however, and the visitors were whistled 11 times.
Â
Early in the second half, momentum began to swing in favor of the home team. In the 54th minute, Laila Murillo chipped a ball over the back line to Kyra Taylor, but her shot was blocked for a corner. The Bulldogs got a cross through the box past four defenders in the 55th minute, but Chelsea Wagner's sliding shot was also blocked.
Â
In the 61st minute, Georgia received three yellow cards in a 60-second span for two fouls and dissent from the bench. Georgia would later be shown two additional yellow cards with an assistant coach collecting another for dissent.
Â
Zoe Main fired off State's best scoring opportunity in the 69th minute. She bent a left-footed shot from the right edge of the 18-yard box at the far post, but Georgia's keeper made a leaping save.
Â
Georgia's BK Harris scored the lone goal off her own rebound after Jenny Harrison saved her first shot on the breakaway. The play was reviewed for offsides on the initial shot attempt, but the call on the field was upheld. There would be only one additional shot taken in the match as Georgia's defense clogged passing lanes down the stretch and repeatedly cleared the ball away.
Â
MSU now awaits its seeding in next week's SEC Tournament. With Sunday's match moved up because of the weather forecast, the Bulldogs must wait to see results around the league. MSU can finish no higher than sixth and no lower than eighth and will open the SEC Tournament on Sunday, Nov. 2 in Pensacola, Florida.
Â
Kentucky and LSU could potentially pass the Bulldogs with a win. If MSU remains the No. 6 seed, it would kick off the postseason at 2 p.m. CT in the second game of the tournament, playing the No. 11 seed.
