January 25, 2025 | Track & Field
CLEMSON, S.C. – Mississippi State track and field closed out the Orange and Purple Invitational on Saturday evening, in Clemson, South Carolina. Day two was highlighted by three major performances on the track, in the men's 800m, and the women's 200m and 800m races.
"It's great that we've improved on some of our performances from last weekend," said head coach Chris Woods. "It's an exciting time for the program. In order for it to stay that way we must continue to build on the groundwork that we've established and take advantage of each opportunity moving forward."
Saturday saw plenty of success on the track for both the women's and men's programs. Abdullahi Hassan made his MSU debut in the 800m, clocking in at 1:45.53 for first place. His time shatters the MSU 800m indoor university record, previously held by World Champion and Olympic Silver Medalist Marco Arop. This finish is currently the collegiate No. 1 time, the second fastest time in the world this year, the Clemson Indoor Facility record, and the sixth fastest collegiate time in history.
Jaitlyn Ware moved to the No. 2 spot on the MSU all-time list in the indoor 200m, just one millisecond from the university record. Ware clocked in at 23.49 for a new personal best, winning her heat and finishing third overall in the women's 200m. Ramat Jimoh earned her first spot on the MSU all-time track and field performance list to accompany her MSU cross-country 6k record. Jimoh ran 2:04.97 for a new personal best in the women's 800m, and the No. 2 spot on the all-time list in the event.
The Bulldogs earned 18 personal bests on the second day of competition. Kaitlyn Walker and Jewel Giles started the day with personal bests in the shot put, throwing 12.17m and 12.97m, respectively. Madison Jones and Brooklyn Quanz earned a pair of career bests in the 3000m, running 9:49.49 and 9:45.45. Six personal bests were set in the 200m, with Ware and Rickyla Fagan representing the women, and Cyrus Jacobs, Kennedy Stringfellow, Nicholas Fakorede and Danarrion Ard running for the men. The 800m squad earned seven career bests, highlighted by Hassan and Jimoh's record-breaking performances. Stringfellow earned his third personal best in the 300m, running 33.64 to finish fifth.
The Bulldogs will take a short break from competition, then will travel to College Station, Texas, for the Charlie Thomas Invitational on Feb. 7-8.
