Series Split After State Shutout On Saturday
May 04, 2024 | Softball
STARKVILLE – The series is split in Starkville after No. 20/19 Mississippi State suffered a 5-0 loss at the hands of No. 14/12 Georgia. Both games have been shutouts, as State blanked the Georgia offense on Friday.
Â
MSU (32-17, 11-12 SEC) collected three hits, all infield singles on Saturday. Georgia (38-14, 12-11 SEC) scored three runs in the first and added another in both the second and fourth innings.
Â
State loaded the bases in the first inning and left runners on first and second in both the sixth and the seventh.
Â
"I think the biggest thing is we must be consistent, and we must be aggressive," head coach Samantha Ricketts said. "It just felt too much like we were taking defensive swings and letting them dictate our at-bats. I think we are too good of an offense for that, but credit to Georgia's pitchers. They did a good job of pitching to their defense and mixing speeds well, and they got ahead early. They put us on our heels. I thought we showed some glimpses of some hard outs where we just weren't getting balls to fall. You want to be tough outs the whole game, and I don't think that we accomplished that today."
Â
Sierra Sacco, Paige Cook and Ella Wesolowski recorded hits in the game. Wesolowski picked off a runner at second base, and Kylee Edwards made a diving stop to start an inning-ending double play with the bases loaded.
Â
Â
Â
Sierra Sacco – Beat out her team-leading eighth infield single of the season … also walked to reach twice.
Â
Ella Wesolowski – Picked off her second runner of the year at second base … collected a hit and a walk to reach twice.
Â
Â
Dallis Goodnight beat out a bunt single and advanced to second on Jaydyn Goodwin's ground out to second base. Goodnight advanced to third on a wild pitch. With two outs, Sara Mosley doubled to left-center field to score Goodnight. Sydney Kuma and Sarah Gordon both reached on a hit-by-pitch to load the bases. Lyndi Rae Davis singled to center field, scoring Mosley and Kuma.
