Bulldogs Fall To No. 22 South Carolina In Series Finale

COLUMBIA, S.C. – A late double broke a 1-1 tie as No. 16 Mississippi State lost, 3-1, at No. 22 South Carolina on Sunday.

The Bulldogs (28-10, 8-7 SEC) fell behind in the first, but answered with a run in the second inning on Kylee Edwards' two-out single. The two teams then traded scoreless frames until the bottom the sixth when the Gamecocks (28-12, 4-8 SEC) strung together three consecutive hits capped by the two-run, game-winning double.

"I mean you've got to give credit to [Alana] Vawter. She's a great pitcher. She does a great job," head coach Samantha Ricketts said. "I thought she mixed up her gameplan and kept us off balance. We need to be able to capitalize and find a way to string together quality at-bats against a pitcher like that."

In addition to Edwards, Jessie Blaine, Madisyn Kennedy and Aquana Brownlee had hits in the contest. Josey Marron threw the entire game, her eight complete game of the year and fifth in SEC play.

Quick Hitters

Two Outs, So What? – State is now batting .328 with two outs and has 107 two-out RBIs, which ranks second in the SEC.

Jessie Blaine – Drew a walk and scored … added a single.

Kylee Edwards – Drove home a run for her 11th two-out RBI of the year.

Madisyn Kennedy – Singled to extend her reached-base streak to 25 games and her hitting streak to four games.

With one out, Riley Blampied doubled to left center when the ball popped out of the sliding left fielder's glove. Zoe Laneaux drove her in with a base hit up the middle.

Jessie Blaine drew a leadoff walk. With one out, she advanced to second on Ella Wesolowski's ground out to short. Blaine scored on Kylee Edwards' single up the middle with two outs.

With one out, Kianna Jones singled into right-center field. Marissa Gonzalez pinch ran for her at first and advanced to second on Anniyah Black's single through the left side. Kyye Ricks ran for Black at first. Both runners scored on Bre Warren's double into right-center field.

Next Up

State has another four-game week ahead of it, returning home to Nusz Park next week to host South Alabama and No. 6/4 Tennessee. The Bulldogs and Jaguars will meet at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 10. MSU welcomes its second top-10 opponent of the year to Nusz Park when the Lady Vols come to town on April 12-14.
