Bulldogs Podium and Break Record on Day Two Of SEC Indoor Championships
February 24, 2024 | Track & Field
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Jhordyn Stallworth, Tyrese Reid and Sherman Hawkins highlighted the Bulldog's success on the final day of competition as the Mississippi State track and field team concluded the Southeastern Conference Indoor Championship. Reid and Hawkins earned their first podium finish, while Stallworth broke the school record for the second time this season.
Hawkins was the first Bulldog to podium in the postseason this year, taking home silver in the high jump with a height of 2.16m (7' 1"). Hawkins, a sophomore, was only one of two competitors to attempt and achieve the respective height, with the other being the reigning NCAA high jump champion and current collegiate leader, Romaine Beckford of Arkansas.
Reid took home the second and final medal for the Bulldogs, placing second in the 800m with a personal record time of 1:47.55. He now ranks fourth on State's all-time top five performance list, moving from fifth. Reid entered the performance list in his first 800m race of the season and has since improved his time in four of the five 800m competitions after.
Jhordyn Stallworth reset the Mississippi State shot put record for the second time this season and the third time in her career with her 5th place distance of 17.02m (56' 1.25"). Stallworth broke her own school record for the first time at the Razorback Invitational on Jan. 26th this year, throwing 16.40m (53' 9.75"), shattering her previous school record set at the 2023 SEC Indoor Championship. In just one year since she set her first school record of 15.78m (51' 9.25"), Stallworth has improved her shot put throw over four feet.
State's only men's indoor thrower, Roury McCloyen, placed 6th in the shot put with a throw of 18.56 (60' 10.75"). McCloyen was the only freshman in the men's shot put field and is currently the only freshman on the top 30 performance list this year, ranked 27th with a distance of 18.75m (61' 6.25"). McCloyen currently owns State's freshman indoor and outdoor record.
Rosealee Cooper earned 5th in the 60m hurdles, a career-best postseason finish with a season-best time of 8.11. Her time currently ranks 14th on the NCAA Indoor qualifying list. Cooper is currently the only woman on the Bulldog squad to have a top 16 qualifying mark, which, if it stands, would qualify her NCAA Indoor Championships.
Mississippi State concluded the weekend with a total of 27 personal records by 18 different bulldogs, six all-time top-five performance list changes, three of which joined a performances list for the first time: Lewis Barber is now second all-top in the Heptathlon, Kyndall Sessom is now ranked fifth all-time in the 60m and Aaron Fortenberry now ranks fourth all-time in the pole vault.
