Sooners Overtake Bulldogs in Four Sets

STARKVILLE – After a hard-fought match, the Mississippi State Bulldogs fell to the Oklahoma Sooners, 3-1.
The Bulldogs were behind 9-8 in set one but grabbed the lead back with 6-0 scoring run from the service of Mele-Corral Blagojevich. State won the set on an attack error by the Sooners. The next three sets were back and forth affairs, as there were a combined 11 tied scores. The Bulldogs ultimately fell short, dropping the third set 25-22.
For only the second time this season and the first time since September 8, a Bulldog put up 20+ digs. McKenna Yates set a career-high and team-best 27 digs. This was the most digs in a single match by a Bulldog all season.
Kailin Newsome led the team in kills with 16 followed by Karli Schmidt, who picked up 15. Amina Shackelford and Rebecca Walk collected 12 and eight kills respectively.
The Bulldogs combined for 17 total blocks in the match. Shackelford led the team with six total blocks. Walk picked up five in the matchup.
Ceci Harness collected a team-best 45 assists alongside two total blocks on Sunday. Corral-Blagojevich picked up a team leading three service aces against the Sooners.
The Bulldogs travel down the road to Tuscaloosa, Alabama for their next matchup as they take on the Alabama Crimson Tide Friday at 6 p.m. The match will be broadcast on SECN+.
