Softball Drops Series With Arkansas On Saturday
April 01, 2023 | Softball
STARKVILLE – Mississippi State fell behind early and never got back in the ballgame, dropping an 11-0 decision in five innings to No. 10 Arkansas on Saturday.
The Razorbacks scored four in the first with the help of three walks and a hit-by-pitch. They added another four on two hits, two walks and an error in the fourth and three more in the fifth.
"We have to be able to give ourselves a chance early in the game. It's hard to constantly play from behind and there were too many free passes and opportunities for their offense before we even had a chance to come to the plate," head coach Samantha Ricketts said. "We know we need to come out stronger, and we need to be sharper all around - pitching, defense, and hitting. We just didn't show that today."
Aquana Brownlee collected two singles for her ninth multi-hit game of the year. Gabby Coffey also picked up her first career hit, and Macy Graf walked to extend her reached-base streak to include every SEC game of the year.
"That's the best part about our sport, is we get a chance to bounce right back the next day and we don't have to wait a week like football or other sports, so it's fun in a way to use it to fuel us and understand that we need to focus on what we do well and come out and play our game tomorrow. It's a great team, and we're going to have to play well throughout all three phases."
Aquana Brownlee on her mindset for the game…
"Before the game I made it my mission to do some good today because I've been in a little slump, I haven't been getting any hits lately but I've been getting good contact on the ball, so I just made that a main focus of having my teammates backs and trying to get it in play to help our team get some runs."
Aquana Brownlee on the message to the team heading into tomorrow's game…
"We just have to compete, we know what they are going to hit us with tomorrow, they are probably going back with Dell so, we got to remember our bats from the first day and just make in bat adjustments it can't be one, two, or three times around the lineup. We got to move fast so we can bounce on them like they bounced on us"
