State Soccer Wins First Round Thriller Over Providence in Starkville
November 11, 2023 | Soccer
STARKVILLE – The eyes of the soccer world delved onto the MSU Soccer Field in Starkville on Saturday as the Bulldogs hosted the Friars in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Ninety minutes were not nearly enough for this tough defensive showcase on the pitch as both squads played to the full 110 minutes, leading to a 1-0 decision as the Dawgs won again to advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Â
As the matchup got underway, both squads looked to assert their style of play on the other. State was able to dominate the midfield and win second-chance balls throughout the early going, leading to several opportunities for State in the first half where they led in shots 4-1. After the break, the Dawgs came out aggressively, dominating in shots 9-3 in the second frame.
Â
1,088 Bulldogs anxiously watched as State and Providence returned to the pitch for the first overtime. At the 95', Maggie Wadsworth delivered once again as she has so many times before in the Maroon and White. Wadsworth did not give up on a ball in the box, splitting the defense to send a ball past the keeper and into the back of the net. The early overtime goal ignited the Bulldog faithful and was ultimately the difference in the contest as the Bulldogs stood tall on defense for the remainder of the contest.
Maddy Anderson and the defensive unit secured the 10th shutout for State this season, safely securing all three of the Friar's attempts on goal.
Â
Mississippi State (11-5-5) will return to the pitch for second-round action to face Brown (12-2-2) in Stanford, California. The date and time for this matchup are currently TBD.
