Third Straight Shutout Keeps State Undefeated
September 01, 2022 | Soccer
STARKVILLE – The Mississippi State soccer program recorded its second scoreless draw of the season, tying South Alabama, 0-0, to remain undefeated. The third consecutive shutout of the season now moves goalkeeper Maddy Anderson into a tie for third on the MSU career shutouts list (10).
"That was a tough game," head coach James Armstrong said. "The back four, plus Maddy [Anderson] came up big tonight in a number of situations, limiting [South Alabama] to zero shots in the second half. This was the first real adversity that we've faced this season, and I thought the second half was much better, though, we have to be able to put two halves together in order to be successful."
South Alabama (3-0-2) entered the match having registered 14 goals and 28 shots on goal. Yet, on Thursday night, the Bulldog defense held the attacking Jags scoreless, for the first time all season. State's backline didn't allow South Alabama to record a single shot on goal, also a first for the visitors.
For the fourth match of the 2022 campaign, the Bulldogs rattled off more shots than their opponent, limiting the visiting Jaguars to only two total shots on the night – both coming in the first half. The two allowed shots are the fewest State has given up all year.
Twenty minutes into the match, South Alabama pieced together one of its best chances of the evening when a Jaguar midfielder played the ball onto a sprinting Jasmine Greene at the top of the box. However, before Greene could get a touch on it, MSU defender Andrea Tyrrell made a sliding save, deflecting the ball out of harm's way and robbing the Jaguars of a scoring opportunity.
State's best chance of the match came in the 37th minute when sophomore Juliet Moore drilled her shot off the crossbar. Fellow sophomore teammate Haley McWhirter headed the ball onto Moore, who took one touch, just outside the box, before ripping her shot toward goal. It would have been the Dallas, Texas, native's first career goal, however her shot bounced off the top of the post.
Mississippi State would outshoot South Alabama nine shots to zero in the second half. The 15 recorded shots is the third-highest shot total of the season for the Bulldogs.
State now improves to 3-0-2 to stay undefeated in non-conference play. The Bulldogs will return to action Sunday (Sept. 4) against Louisiana Tech (2-2-1) in the last outing of State's four-match homestand.
