Home Runs Down Mississippi State At No. 17 Missouri
April 17, 2021 | Softball
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mississippi State's softball team dropped a pair of tight contests at No. 17 Missouri on Saturday, losing 5-2 and 4-3. The Tigers hit four home runs, which account for seven of their nine runs on the day.
MSU (22-18, 0-11 SEC) saw its rally come up just short in the second game of the day. Trailing, 4-0, entering the seventh, Jackie McKenna provided a three-run homer with State down to its final out.
Playing in her home state on her birthday, Addison Purvis provided all of the Bulldogs' scoring in the first game with a pinch-hit, two-out, two-run double in the fifth.
"It was good to see us fight back, especially in that second game," head coach Samantha Ricketts said. "For Addi, that's a hard thing to do, to come off the bench in that spot and deliver, but we had plenty of faith in her and that's why you see her in the lineup in the second game. Jackie too, in that last inning, stayed calm, stayed with her plan and got a good pitch to hit."
Annie Willis threw her sixth complete game in Game 2, striking out 10 along the way. Emily Williams drew the start in the opener and went 3.2 innings. Alyssa Loza came on in relief and allowed just one hit, a solo homer, in 2.1 innings of work.
