Soccer Keeps Clean Sheet in Win Over Red Wolves
March 13, 2021 | Soccer
Two newcomers scored their first career goals en route to a win.
STARKVILLE – Mississippi State soccer found a win while keeping a clean sheet against Arkansas State.
"Obviously it's great to be unbeaten so far," said head coach James Armstrong. "The unique challenge is that this is the first time spring games count toward your record."
The Bulldogs (4-4-3) found their second-straight win of the spring while dealing Arkansas State (11-3-1) a shutout.
Newcomers Hannah Telleysh and Marcella Cash had their first goals in maroon and white against the Red Wolves.
The Arkansas State keeper cleared a ball out, but it ended up in the Bulldogs' possession. A cross by Alyssa D'Aloise found a few players in red, but a touch ended up at Telleysh's feet. She knocked a screamer into the back left corner of the net, fired away from 25 yards out. Her first goal came on her second game receiving a starting nod in the 15th minute of the match.
The Red Wolves attempted to respond but a shot from Sarah Sodoma sailed over the net from 20 yards out.
Going into the half, the Dawgs held their 1-0 lead.
In the 51st minute, State increased the lead to two with the help of Cash. Madison Cotta served a great ball to Cash, who headed it in past the Red Wolves netminder.
Arkansas State's Sodoma tried once again to respond, but Hannah Pimentel, who entered the match at the start of the second half, stopped the attempt.
"We had so much of the ball," said Armstrong. "We felt that we were going to get some chances, but we were waiting to see who was going to create that little bit of special talent. Hannah Telleysh with that shot was a great bit of skill. Marcella Cash is one of the hardest working people on team. She came in as a goal scorer, and when you haven't gotten a goal in so long it starts to weigh on your mind. You could see once that goal went in, there was weight lifted off her shoulders. She played a lot better afterwards. Hopefully that will kick both of them on moving forward in terms of that confidence."
Overall, the Bulldogs had the edge in total shots, going 13-9 against the Red Wolves. Maddy Anderson had three first-half saves, while Pimentel stopped two in the second.
The Bulldogs return to the pitch on March 20, facing Troy with a 3pm match on Saturday.
