FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – On Saturday indoors in Fayetteville, the No. 8 Mississippi State men's tennis team notched its sixth consecutive victory, taking down No. 38 Arkansas 5-2.
The Bulldogs (16-3, 8-1 SEC) captured another doubles point and rode that momentum into four singles wins to oust the Razorbacks (11-11, 2-6) for the 11th match in a row, despite 2018 singles All-American Giovanni Oradini not being in the lineup due to injury. MSU has also won 14 of its last 16 against UA and leads the series 30-7.
"The Road Dawgs showed a lot of resiliency today competing without one of our top players," head coach Matt Roberts said. "They embraced the challenge and played sharp, tough tennis to get the job done. They stayed together all day and had a lot of fun competing together. We will take this momentum into our next home match against Ole Miss on Friday."
The Bulldogs took a tight doubles point to go up 1-0 early against the Razorbacks, claiming victories on courts 1 and 3. On court 3, State's Niclas Braun and Florian Broska upended the Arkansas duo of Jose Alonso and Alex Reco 6-3.
On court 1, the eighth-ranked MSU duo of Nuno Borges and Strahinja Rakic were engaged in a back-and-forth battle with the Razorback tandem of Oscar Mesquida and Adam Sanjurjo. Borges and Rakic got the break they needed at 4-all to go up 5-4, where they served it out to clinch the doubles point. State has now won 28 of its last 30 doubles points dating back to last season.
At the clincher, Trevor Foshey and Gregor Ramskogler were knotted up at 5-all on court 2 against UA's Enrique Paya and Maxim Verboven.
In singles, State moved ahead 2-0 when Rakic captured his second consecutive straight-set victory, downing UA's Reco 6-4, 6-3 on court 3. Moments later, the Razorbacks cut the Bulldogs' advantage to 2-1 when Josh Howard-Tripp upended MSU's Braun at No. 2 singles in a 6-3, 6-3 decision.
Foshey then placed MSU within striking distance of clinching with a solid 6-4, 6-3 victory over the Razorbacks' Paya on court 4, which marked the senior's fourth straight victory.
The second-ranked Borges then provided the clincher for the Maroon and White, fending off Arkansas' No. 52 Mesquida 6-3, 7-6(3) on court 1. Borges, the reigning SEC Player of the Week, extended his career-long winning streak to 18 matches and has not dropped a dual match in 2019 (17-0). During his impressive run, he has claimed 18 of 19 sets in singles in SEC play, including 12 in a row.
After the clinch, the remaining two courts were played out, with MSU and Arkansas each earning a victory. The Bulldogs' Ramskogler posted his third singles triumph of the year with a tough 7-6(7), 6-3 win over Verboven on court 6, while Arkansas won its second point of the afternoon on court 5, with Alonso edging MSU's Broska 6-4, 6-4.
