BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – A pair of Mississippi State men's tennis newcomers picked up a victory on the first day of action at the Country Club of Birmingham (CCB) Collegiate Invitational on Friday.
Gregor Ramskogler and Stedman Strickland first teamed up for two rounds of doubles to start off the day in the White Doubles Draw. In their first match as a pair, Ramskogler and Strickland earned a strong 8-3 win against UAB's Giovani Pasini and Fernando Vargas. The win marked Strickland's first as a Bulldog.
In their second match, Ramskogler and Strickland dropped a hard-fought 8-5 decision to top-seeded Mieszko Kwasniewski and Chung-Han Tsai of Southern Miss. The State tandem will take on the second-seeded Tulane duo of Hamish Stewart and Eric Wagner in their final doubles contest of the weekend Sunday at 9 a.m. CT.
In singles, both Ramskogler and Strickland dropped their first-round bouts. The freshman Ramskogler dropped a tough 6-3, 6-4 decision to Middle Tennessee's Stijn Slump in the White Singles Draw, while the sophomore Strickland fell to third-seeded Santiago Di Loreto of South Alabama by a 6-2, 6-0 mark in the Houndstooth Draw.
Both players will be guaranteed three more matches in singles in the event, with two of the remaining three rounds of singles to be played Saturday.
In his next match, Ramskogler is set to face Lipscomb's Pedro Uribe at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, while Strickland will square off against MTSU's Jacob Pugh at the same time. The day's second round of matches is set for a 1:30 p.m. start.
