Two-Out Double Leads State To Comeback Win
April 14, 2016 | Softball
RUSTON, La. – Sparked by an 11-pitch at bat from freshman Sabrina Turner, the Mississippi State softball team (22-18) scored three in the fifth for a comeback road win over LA Tech (21-14).
MSU downed the Lady Techsters 3-2 for a non-conference road win that gave the Bulldogs their ninth comeback win of the season and No. 59 under head coach Vann Stuedeman.
A walk, an error, a single and a double led to a three-run inning for State that turned a 2-0 deficit into a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth inning.
“Road wins are always good wins,” Stuedeman said. “We put together a good offensive fifth inning starting it off with an 11-pitch Sabrina Turner walk and finishing with a Caroline Seitz clutch two-out double on an 0-2 count. I am looking forward to getting home for Super Bulldog Weekend.”
After retiring the Bulldogs in order to open the game, the Lady Techsters struck with a two-run home run with two outs to jump out to an early 2-0 lead.
With one out in the top of the fifth, Turner drew a walk on an 11-pitch at bat to become the first State baserunner of the inning. A LA Tech error put sophomore Calyn Adams on base to give MSU two runners. A single up the middle from freshman Emily Heimberger followed and scored Turner from second with ease, cutting the deficit in half.
The inning would continue as junior Caroline Seitz drove a two-out double into the gap in left center, scoring both Adams and Heimberger to give State a 3-2 advantage for its first lead of the game.
The Lady Techsters looked to even the score in the home half of the sixth by putting runners on first and second with one out. Freshman Regan Green entered in relief of junior starter Alexis Silkwood and retired the next two batters to escape the jam unscathed.
LA Tech brought more pressure in the bottom of the seventh by putting runners on second and third with one out. Following a fly out and an intentional walk to load the bases, sophomore Holly Ward entered in search of the final out. With a 1-2 count, the final out of the game was recorded to secure the 3-2 victory.
After allowing two runs in the first, Silkwood (2-5) settled down to collect the win by allowing just two runs on four hits along with seven strikeouts in 5.1 innings in the circle. Ward (2) picked up the save by recording the game's final out, her only batter faced on the night.
Bailey Allen (9-5) suffered the loss after allowing all three MSU runs on four hits over 6.2 innings pitched.
State will return home for Super Bulldog Weekend for a three-game SEC series with No. 11 LSU that will begin Friday, April 15 at 5:34 p.m. CT. Admission is free for all regular season games at Nusz Park.
